Framingham Public Library

Framingham, MA

[ THE CHALLENGE ]  Redesign the site and entries at the central library built in 1975 to create a more welcoming connection to city.

[THE RESPONSE]   An inclined landscape provides a gradual transition from the street to the first floor five feet above it.  A light steel and polycarbonate arcade create a sheltered passage and a new front face for the heavy masonry building.  Along with the reading garden on the side that replaces a parking garage, they create a compelling sequence of accessible public spaces.
