Joy Street Studios

Somerville, MA

[ THE CHALLENGE ]  Convert an early 20th century mill building into artists studios and a gallery; maintain the industrial character while expressing the new uses.

[ THE RESPONSE ]    Stud and drywall partitions topped by wire fabric preserve the scale of the spaces and distributes natural light while providing security for artists.  The  glass and stainless steel gallery opens up to rooftop exhibition areas.  Expressive entries and signage give the studios a dynamic public presence; replacement windows and masonry restoration renew the original construction.
