New England Aquarium
Marine Mammal Environment

Boston, MA

[ THE CHALLENGE ]  Turn a concrete holding pool surrounded by blank walls into a vibrant sea mammal habitat and visitor experience. Negotiate five vertical feet of elevation change up to the main floor of the Aquarium with a seamless series of barrier-free walks and viewing areas

[ THE RESPONSE ]  Orchestrated as a procession of ramps and platforms for viewing the animals and their trainers, the exhibit is designed to provide a multiplicity of ways to interact with the seals, otters and their environment. Translucent shading panels and walls of glass draw people and animals together in an ever changing experience of light and movement. Behind the scenes are a sophisticated but value conscious series of engineering solutions.
