Algiers Café

Cambridge, MA

[ THE CHALLENGE ]  Evoke the culture and character of Algeria with contemporary architectural forms – paralleling this Harvard Square restaurant’s reinvention of North African cuisine.

[ THE RESPONSE ]  Wood, iron, glass  and stone  are carefully detailed reinterpretations of the soaring vaults and comfortable corners found in Algerian bazaars.  Corner supports are modeled on muquarnas, here laser cut from cherry plywood rather than hand carved from solid cedar blocks. A second floor roof terrace ties the interiors, within historic Brattle Hall, to the public life outside.
