[ THE CHALLENGE ] Convert a 100 year old 5 story commercial building in the center of Lynn into 8 live-work artists’ studios and a ground floor gallery. Create a memorable evocation of the city’s resurgence at the heart of the city’s downtown arts district while achieving LEED Gold certification.
[ THE RESPONSE ] Steel balconies penetrate through a glass curtain wall to give double height studios a presence on the street, shaded and sheltered by cantilevered sunshades. Sleeping lofts fit above kitchens and bathrooms and overlook working space. Bands and blocks of open storage zones space and fills in as railings, below stairs and above kitchens.
