[ THE CHALLENGE ]  Improve outdated systems at the City of Boston’s Family Justice Center, repair failing roof and facade construction, and improve the appearance of this prominent Commonwealth Avenue structure that sits within the extended Boston University campus.

[ THE RESPONSE ]  The recently completed multi-phase Deep Energy Retrofit includes replacement of entrances and windows, and restoration of the front façade with an updated color scheme. The side and rear facades are wrapped with insulated metal panels in bold patterns and colors linked to the blue of the front façade and rust orange of surrounding Boston brick. Together the facades reinforce and celebrate the urban conditions of the alleyways and of the wide thoroughfare the building helps define. Roof replacement with increased insulation and new HVAC systems complete the DER, supported by a new elevator and upgraded electrical systems throughout.
